Music video analysis 1- Bulls in the Bronx- camerawork inspiration

We thought that because we chose Pierce The Veil as the artist for our music video, we would take a look at their other work in their other music videos and we could then take some inspirations from their work and use it in ours:

Bulls in the Bronx is a music video that has a high tempo, quick cuts and parallel edits.
The music video begins with a fade from black transition to a close up of a bike, and the title of the band and the song, appears soon after. It cuts to a band rocking inside a house, with 3 guitarists and a drummer. This indicates to the audience that they are an organic band as they are purely focused on pursuing a long career in the music industry. Our main inspiration from this video came from the camerawork. I noticed when watching the music video of how effective the quick pan and quick tilts are just before cross cutting. We can see that the guitarists’ jump is in time to the beat, as are the other quick cuts in the video. A cross cut is made to the narrative, which also provided inspiration, as each cut was made to the appropriate time. The narrative is about a girl going behind her dads back, and making herself look glamorous to see a boy, who has climbed up the house to get there. Next, the lyrics relate to the visuals as “we wake up and never see the sky”. A tilt is made looking up at the stars in the sky, and then during the instrumental, we see the couple in their respective dance outfits in a dream. The dream feel is created by a number of fades and transitions, and a change in brightness/colour. there is a close up of the guitar in between which shows the authenticity to the music. The father then catches the boy after the dream is finished. an over the shoulder shot in a high angle position emphasises the boys vulnerability. During the chase scene, there is a visual contrast in the editing. The chase is filmed in slow-motion, and the parallel edit to the band has a much higher tempo and looks much faster due to the quick cut to the beats. This also is an effective way of editing the footage which could be considered when filming our video, as long as the visuals fit into the timing of the beat/music.
